Know Canada

It looks like Canada’s birthday present is a makeover! Bruce Mau Design was recently approached to participate in a “Redesigns” series and they’ve decided to tackle the entire country of Canada for an image facelift.
“Canada has an image problem in the US. When Americans think of Canada, stale and often cliché ideas and imagery come to mind. Images like maple syrup, hockey, snow and lots of it. These images don’t pay homage to the intellectual, creative and social contributions that Canada makes as a country on a global scale. These clichés do not accurately depict the 21st Century Canada.
In our redesign, we begin with an assertion that Americans simply don’t understand Canada. Our view is that Canada doesn’t need a redesign; rather, Americans need to be educated.”
I personally have a lot of fun with these silly Canadian stereotypes – I’ve been asked everything from “do you have Halloween in Canada?” to “who is the president of Canada?” – but I’m very interested in this campaign and hope that soon I’ll see a well-designed billboard in Times Square promoting my home country.

Jess & Russ

Jessica Hische and Russ Maschmeyer are rockstars in the creative design and online world. Everything they do is arguably ground-breaking, new, exciting, and beautiful and now they’re about to begin their greatest collaboration: marriage.
Of course they couldn’t settle for the typical mailed-out wedding invitations, they had to do something new and unique, something that puts our visual love story to shame. These two built a website putting their lives from 1996 on into a timeline complete with original illustrations, links to funny photos and videos, and intimate stories. The whole thing makes me so excited with jealousy and admiration, I could scream! Take a look:
See the entire timeline and invitation here. It’s long, but it’s worth it!
Congratulations, Jessica and Russ!
Wander Postcard Project

I love these posters/postcards designed for The Wander Postcard Project! They’re all so different, but convey the great message that traveling is good for the soul. I especially agree with this message in what Nick and I have named “The Year of Yes”, in which we are trying to travel as much as possible.
Visit their website to see even more posters and download the images as wallpaper for your phone, iPad, and more.

A Year in Review

I absolutely love this idea for a Christmas card/year end summary about a married couple’s year-long achievements and highlights.
This makes me want to do something similar for my family and friends, since most of them are in Canada. I’m sure having a letterpress in your home makes you want to create all kinds of things!

A1 Scrabble

In my personal findings I think generally if you’re a big fan of Scrabble, you can usually appreciate a good font and typography design as well. That’s why I think this Scrabble set would be huge if it came into fruition – this set was designed by Industrial Design Student Andrew Clifford with the idea to give Scrabble players a choice of what font they’d like their set to come in. It’s unclear if this will be available to purchase anytime soon, but let’s cross our fingers that this inspires Scrabble to pick up his design!

Doublenaut + Design*Sponge

My favourite Toronto twins Matt and Andrew McCracken have been featured on Design*Sponge!
Chances are if you’re reading my blog, you already know the McCrackens, but if you don’t, the brothers run a design company called Doublenaut. They specialize in posters, but also create wonderful websites, t-shirts, and more. The company operates out of their apartment that the two share, which explains why it’s so carefully and simply organized.
Check out more photos of their all-purpose space here.
Bad Dads

Whenever I’m home alone on any night that doesn’t offer good television programming, I get an urge to whip out some Wes Anderson movies and giggle at the same quirks I’ve been giggling at for years now. Now that I’ve stumbled upon these posters by Kevin Tong, in his series “Bad Dads: an art show tribute to the films of Wes Anderson”, tonight is no exception.

Now all I have to decide is: Royal Tenenbaums or Rushmore?
A couple things…

New York is enjoying some much-needed rainstorms today and Nick and I are inside, lounging on the couch, being happy to be inside and in each other’s company (even if he is watching baseball and I am blogging ;)
Here’s a couple posts from around the web I think you’ll enjoy.
Super cute (and detailed) desserts!
Confused by the hearsay of what Facebook Places really is and if you should partake in this new application? Read this interesting and informative article.
Insound’s 10 For 10 design series features t-shirts and posters from bands such as Broken Social Scene with original art by Sonnenzimmer.
Dark chocolate milk? Get into my fridge!!
I love it when bands put original and eye-pleasing designs into their branding, like Arcade Fire’s new record design & totebags.
