Check out my new article on She Does The City!!! (It only took me a month to settle down and write it after the moving madness ended. Phew.)

Hardcore shows and old Canadian pals

June 22, 2009 § 4 Comments

I spent the last two nights with my friend Shannon, whom I’ve known for over a decade, but we were never tier one friends back then, just good acquaintances who sat together in Psychology. Since our lives are running frighteningly parallel [brief explanation: Shannon & I went to high school together in Winnipeg, she met a guy from Queens years ago, moved to NYC and married him about 3 years ago, and now she’s the one giving me immigration advice over beers that we both truly appreciate because both of our men are straight-edge AND knew each other from working with various bands] we’ve begun spending more and more time together.

Last night she took me to see H20 at the Knitting Factory. I’ve never been into hardcore, but I was down to hang. We caught the end of the show where H20 and Madball performed together for their supergroup of sorts “Hazen Street”. They were actually really good! After the show, we gave the bassist, Hoya, a ride home. This HUGE, tough, hardcore guy showed me photos of his 10 month old son all the way to Brooklyn. I also met the singer, Freddie and his girlfriend Lisa, and it turns out they live 4 blocks away from me.

All I knew about Madball before last night was that they were a hardcore band that all the toughest people I knew loved and I once designed an admat for them [shown above].

And so my new New York life continues to develop.

Working hard to be a real New Yorker

Tonight I begin working at the McCaig-Welles Gallery in Williamsburg!

I had an interview to be a volunteer at the gallery yesterday and it went well. It’s run mostly by other ladies, who all seem great, and there’s even a cat that lives there! What a score. Tonight we are hosting a live band as part of the Northside Festival.

Hopefully this proves to be a great way to meet interesting people and learn new things. I could even learn how to do custom framing!

In other news, New York is rainy. I’d really like a day of sunshine, ice cream, short skirts, and unbearably warm weather instead of leggings, rainboots, and hot beverages.

Week two

I had a dream about my old office in Toronto last night where it was my last day of work and they brought back four former co-workers as a surprise to see me off, but they were all more interested in eating their pizza lunches than hanging out. Also, as a gift, they all thought it would be hilarious to fill a big with American change and random trinkets to give to me. All I could think was “you guys didn’t realize I’m purging all my stuff right now? Why would I want this garbage?”

My last hang with my office was awesome, I don’t know why my unconscious is trying to ruin it.

Hello, NYC

After an exhausting month of May, I am actually here. I am actually living in Brooklyn, NY. I no longer have an apartment in Toronto; the place I shared with Angela for the past 2.5 years is no longer ours, and I am in a brand new, nearly empty apartment with Nick. I am so relieved to have wrapped up everything that was going on in my life in Toronto enough to be able to come here and start clean, but it’s also a total trip. While I was getting so many things ready, making to do lists left right and centre, and finishing up my job by training a new full-time receptionist, I couldn’t shake the weird feeling that I was undoing the life I had been building for seven years. I know it’s not really the case because the only things that are really gone are my job (and I’m still hanging on by a thread in my Web Manager position, no pun intended) and my apartment, both things that could have been improved on anyways.

I have relocated enough in my life to know that things are the hardest right after you move somewhere and have to leave things behind, but I also know that moving to a new city provides a clean slate like nothing else. I’m also so happy to finally be able to see Nick everyday. When I was on my way to our new apartment from the airport on Saturday, we blackberry messaged each other my whole cab ride as I was getting closer and we were both getting more excited. I was lucky enough to not only be greeted with his huge smile, but also a bouquet of roses and a 6-pack of beer. I love him.

Expect more updates from now on!
