I was out with a friend for dinner last week and something he said stuck with me – “You’re lucky to be able to be proud of where you are from”. You see, he grew up in New Jersey. When you live in New York, most people don’t like to brag, let alone talk, about being from Jersey. I’m sure The Jersey Shore has not helped this particular situation (no pun intended), but it’s unfortunate nonetheless. I’m pretty outspoken about being Canadian and being from Toronto and Winnipeg, but I think no matter where you grew up, you should be proud of it. Find at least one great thing about your hometown and let everyone know about it. Now that I’m in America, I think of myself as an unofficial Canadian ambassador. We could use more unofficial ambassadors of Ohio, Calgary, Africa, or even New Jersey!
Are you proud of your hometown?

Have you ever been in a long-distance relationship? If you have, you know it’s not easy. Nick and I dated long distance, New York to Toronto, for two years before I decided to move to New York. That wasn’t the end though, we tacked another 8 months onto the two years while I was stuck in Canada, waiting for my engagement visa.
It seems only the strongest, most stubborn make it, but things are getting easier with today’s technology. Blackberry Messenger was our saving grace, but now there’s something that seems even better – a new iPhone app called Pair.
The app includes a feature called “thumb kiss” that vibrates when both parties touch the same spot on the screen. Couples can also co-create drawings, maintain a joint to-do list and send a “thinking of you” message that works like a more thoughtful Facebook poke.
Three of the five men who created Pair are currently in long-distance relationships. I bet they won bigtime points with their ladies for this development!
Do you think this app is adorable or nauseating? I’d love to hear your thoughts on long-distance relationships!

Are you as excited as I am for Sunday night? It’s the return of Mad Men and it’s about time! It seems like everyone’s looking forward to this premiere. AMC has even been running commercials with a sense of a humour leading up to it like this Walking Dead spoof.
Do you have any predictions for this season?

I flew up to Toronto on Wednesday to spend 5 days with some of my favourite Canadians!
For the first time since I moved to New York, I stayed with my sister for the majority of my visit. I was happy to get in so much time with her and her adorable family. I was reminded how much work it is – and how exhausting it is – to take care of two tiny ones all day long for three days straight. Oh, and did I mention they have a seven week-old puppy?
I mean, geez. How could I have missed Biscuit the puppy’s cutest month? I couldn’t. It was great timing for feet-biting cuteness.
Wednesday night, we had a bit of a party at the Martins’ in Oshawa. My parents and brother Ryan and his wife Suzanne came over for dinner…
…We had birthday cupcakes for Mom…
…and we played in the park afterwards.
Look at Jillian’s hilarious little face and firey hair. You need to zoom in on this one – she’s having the best time!
It was so nice to get to see so much of Jenn. I love spending time with the kids, but my favourite parts of the visit were at night when they’d be in bed and we’d drink wine and talk. She’s so strong and is such an amazing mom. For those who have been asking, she’s doing much better than you’d ever think after the worst thing happened last month.
After spending a “girls’ night” with Jenn and my Mom at the cottage on Friday night, I said goodbye to family and took the train into Toronto for the weekend. I stayed at Julia and Jay’s place, but since they were at a wedding Saturday night, I spent the evening (and night and early morning) with two of my favourites, Sarah and Karen.
We went to Woodlot, a tasty and extremely popular new Toronto restaurant, and then a few bars on Dundas Street. Guest appearances by Rob Blyth, Tami Noa Levy, and Stephen Bowles happened then we ended up at Sarah Townson’s house for St. Patrick’s festivities with Amy, Emillie, Damian, and Bettie! I stayed out way past my bedtime, but it was so nice to see everyone! Don’t you love it when you don’t have to sit and catch up, instead you embrace the moment and laugh and joke like old times? I sure do.
Toronto, you are the best. Please never change so I can come back every few months and love you again!
Now what you really came for… OBLIGATORY PUPPY PHOTOS!

This weekend may have started off with a trip to Atlantic City, but the rest of it was healthier than most!
My friend Kate and I had been talking about trying Soul Cycle – the mecca of upscale spinning classes – for a while, since we are both lovers of fitness and Kelly Ripa. On Saturday, we finally made it happen.
I can tell you, that class is no joke! The instructor was great – entertaining and energetic – and the music selection wasn’t bad either. I was happy to get a bike between the wall and my friend Annie and the dim lights helped me to let loose, and not worry about what I looked like as I struggled to catch my breath and sweated buckets.
The hour actually went by fairly quickly, but by the end, all four of us had faces so bright red we looked sunburnt.
The $32 a class cost and the dehydration/exhaustion headache I got afterwards may keep me away for a little while, but seeing Jake Gyllenhaal walk out of the class before me may make me want to hit that 3pm Saturday class again soon.
Sunday morning, I was back in my element with Ashtanga. Living Social featured a great deal on my favourite yoga studio last week so four friends signed up, and three of them accompanied Nick and I to class on Sunday!
As usual, it was fantastic and so great to have some friends to introduce to the class. Afterwards we all had a tasty brunch at Juliette. I can’t think of anything I’d rather do on a Sunday morning than yoga and brunch!
How was your weekend?
