Impromptu Photo Shoots

Unplanned photo shoots – aren’t they always the best ones?

_DSC7773

I love the photos my DSLR takes with its 50mm lens, but since Henry became mobile, it’s been more challenging to shoot manually. Then the other night after dinner, I found a school bus I’d hidden in my dresser because Henry was trying to eat the wheels off it. Now that he’s a bit older (and less likely to eat a choking hazard), he was completely enchanted with the bus, driving it around the windowsill of his bedroom.

Then… Dad came home!

Nick had his usual after work snack: Henry’s belly.

And then things got sweet.

This Week In Links

Happy Friday! Do you guys have any awesome Fall weekend plans? My brother and his wife are in town so Nick and I will be meeting up with them. We’ll also be waiting for Henry to decide to arrive! It would be great if my brother’s trip coincided with him coming, but we’ll just have to wait and see what happens…

Here’s what I’ve been enjoying this week online (besides last-minute labour and newborn care articles):

This dog will only ride in a car if you’re holding his paw.

19 Idiotic, but completely real, travel complaints.

I guess I have these to look forward to :\

Amazing kids’ Halloween costumes that they’re too young to understand.

New York + London: A Collection of Double Exposures

This guy’s Halloween costume efforts put us all to shame.

Laughing at people freaking out at a haunted house is the best.

Jay and Julia

January 26, 2013 § 1 Comment

The Deakin-Gordon wedding may have happened four months ago, but their fantastic wedding photographer (and I mean seriously talented) Rick O’Brien just posted a summary of the events on his blog with photos yesterday. When Julia showed me his previous work, I knew the photos would be great, but seeing them finished yesterday blew me away. It’s great to see that Rick managed to show the absolute beauty that radiated through this entire wedding with his photos.

Kate & Bryan Get Married

December 9, 2012 § 4 Comments

After being engaged for over 3 years, two of my favourite New Yorkers finally tied the knot last month at City Hall!

reP1010993

It was a surprise wedding, so there was no talk of it before and even after for a few days. Kate told me about their plan to get hitched the Monday before the Friday they had both taken off work. I was very impressed by their secret-keeping abilities!

re_DSC6987

I felt so honoured to be one of only a few guests. Bryan’s Mom, Dad, and brother came, then also a few friends of Kate’s since her family lives in Kansas and Colorado. Of course, I offered my photography skills to them for their last minute wedding – just because you’re only spending $65 to get married doesn’t mean you can’t have photos to remember it!

reP1010957

We all met at City Hall around 2:00. Bryan’s brother was their witness.

re_DSC6970

The place was packed so we entertained ourselves for an hour. It was much busier than when Nick and I were married around noon on a Thursday. As always, it was so fun seeing all the other people getting married, especially what they all chose to wear. Check these guys out! I hope they were marrying each other in those suits.

re_DSC6974

Kate looked stunning.

re_DSC6964

The groom and his Dad didn’t look so bad either!

re_DSC7005

Finally, it was their turn.

re_DSC6998

The ceremony at City Hall is about 2 minutes long. Just long enough to make it official with a bit of sentiment and about 10 seconds to tear up in happiness for the lovely couple.

re_DSC7024

Bonus: They were married by the same officiant as Nick and I!

It’s official, the Vastanos (or Vastanleys, as I like to call them) are finally married!

After the ceremony, our group walked around the neighbourhood to take some photos. Only in New York, will you get some wedding photo gems like this.

But also, this.

Kate is still Kate, even on her wedding day.

re_DSC7075

Lots of walking was done.

When we snapped enough photos, they decided it was time for one last surprise.

reP1020100

Bryan and Kate gave his parents a card with a sonogram in it.

They both agreed, it was one of the best days of their lives.

Congratulations, Kate and Bryan!

Never Enough

I am a firm believer that you can never have too many photographs.

…Even when you’re riding a double decker bus in London and your husband thinks it’s time to stop taking photos, it probably isn’t.

Because someday you’re going to look back on these photos and be so glad you took the time to take them.

Tell me, what do you take photos of and do you take them often?

Also, I’m becoming an Instagram addict. Find me there: “christinastorch”.

World Press Photos of the Year

February 10, 2012 § Leave a comment

The Best Photos of the Year have been announced, as according to World Press Photo. Here are some of my favourites:

Donald Miralle, Jr., Ironman World Championships, 1st place, Sports

Damir Sagolj, North Korea, 1st place, Daily Life (singles)

Lars Lindqvist, Earthquake in Japan, 2nd place, General News (singles)

Salil Bera, Leopard, Honorable Mention, Spot News (singles)

I didn’t include the photo that won first prize, because I’m not sure I agree it’s the best. See them all here. Which are your favourites?

The Eiffel Tower

September 8, 2011 § 3 Comments

P1000318

What better way to begin my coverage of Paris than with the Eiffel Tower?

Nick and I headed there the second night of our stay just before sunset. I couldn’t have thought of a more perfect time to view the whole city from above.

P1000315

There were huge lines at all four legs of the tower to purchase tickets to ride up. We picked the “Plier Est” or Eastern leg and waited the long long wait to buy our tickets and then to ride the elevator up.

We couldn’t go to the very top because it was too full already, but we rode to the 2e etage (or 2nd level) which was high enough for us!

P1000348
The deck of the 2nd level was packed. I don’t know if sunset is just a very popular time to visit the tower, or if it’s always busy. I’m guessing the latter

P1000350
The restaurant inside the tower – apparently it’s very expensive and requires reservations months in advance!

P1000351
The people below us look like ants!

P1000353
The metal that makes up the tower looks beautiful and interesting at night, when it’s lit up by very strong spotlights.

What no one tells you when you go up the Eiffel Tower is that you have to walk back down! I didn’t get as dizzy as I thought I would, but my calves were aching for days afterwards.

P1000356
Happy to be on the ground again

P1000379
A pretty carousel across from the Eiffel Tower

P1000367
Just as we turned around and were about to conclude our visit to the tower, it lit up and started to sparkle! Then of course we had to stay and take many many more photos.

P1000371

P1000370

Although we had to deal with many pushy tourists from all over the world and one of the longest lines we faced all week, visiting the Eiffel Tower was definitely a highlight of our trip. How could I refuse the photo ops?

Stay tuned for much more Paris!
